Yesterday our 7th graders had the pleasure and honor spending time with David Kwizera, culture keeper, dancer and drummer from Rwanda. Thanks to the extraordinary LEAF International program for bringing David to us, to share his stories and culture. We are so grateful.
David is the Chief of a group of 25 teen boys who had lost their families during the Rwandan genocide. With the support of LEAF International, David and other boys affected by the genocide have been using drum and dance to find, embrace and share stories and traditions of their culture with the world. 11 years after LEAF began this program in Rwanda, David and many of his "brothers" have elevated themselves from street kids to being world class musicians and teachers. Their journey has been and continues to be unimaginable, difficult, and yet so inspiring.
Being Culture Keepers brings them pride, happiness, and economic opportunities. We are thrilled to be able to support this effort by bringing Rwandan culture and stories to life here at Evergreen. Our 7th grade had the opportunity for an intimate workshop with David yesterday. Next Tuesday, David will be leading a drumming workshop in after school with our 5th through 8th graders. Please contact James Wilson if you have questions.
