Nominated by Elizabeth Flemming
When was this person born?
November 18, 1972.
Why is this person a hero to you?
Stephen works to provide mountain bike outings and environmental education for kids who would not otherwise be exposed to such activities through Trips For Kids WNC. After spending several years in the child mental health field, and finding a lack of options for local youth to participate in cycling, Stephen decided it was time to jump in and do something about it. After meeting with various local youth and cycling advocates, the plans developed with seeming ease. The chapter was approved and the program was rolled out to the public. Trips For Kids WNC has provided bikes and outings to over 2000 kids since launching the program.
Do you know any stories about this person's childhood?
Stephen grew up riding his bike all over Bonaire, the Caribbean island he spent most of his teen years on. After moving back to the US, he ended up riding his bike on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway, across America- from San Diego, CA to Wilmington, NC. In recent years, he has completed several long distance endurance mountain biking events including: The Alleghany Mtns Loop, 6 time finisher of the Pisgah MTB Stage Race, Cohutta 100, Burn 24, Cowbell Challenge and more.
Is there anything else we should know about your nominee?
His positive nature, belief in service and desire to make a difference are all great reasons Stephen should be a Hero of Asheville.
